살고 있는 펑신도에게 맡겨진 중대한 사명중의 하나는 예수님께서 분부하신 ‘너회는 가서 모든 족속에게
너회에게 분부한 모든 것을 가르쳐 우리 세대에 예수 그리스도를 모든 종족에게!
Jesus Christ for Every People in our Times!21 세기의 여명이 밝아오는 역사의 분수령 서기 2000년은 새 시대를 향한 회망과 도전을 요청하며, 특히 우리들 각성된 복음주의자들로 하여금 지구촌복음화의 기념비적 이정표를 세우도록 독촉하시는 성령의 음성을 듣게 한다.
그리하여 왕의 재림을 대망하는 종말론적 시대감각과 지상명령의 긴박성을 절감하는 범세계적 복음주의선교운동들이 2000년대를 「천국추수의 년대」로 상정하는 공통된 비전을 나누는 현시점에서 제3차 한인세계선교대회(Korean World Missions '96)는 이 시대 한민족의 그리스도인들을 향해 선교적 대각성과
총동원을 명령하시는 「하나님의 비전성명」 (Vision Statement of God)이라고 확신한다.
사상 유례없는 800명 한인선교사를 비롯하여 목회자, 신학자, 평신도, 여성, 청년, 대학생 등 한국교회의 선교동반자들이 한 광장에 집결하는 이 역사적 선교대회는 비견의 융합(Fusion of Vision), 기도의 연합(Concert of Prayer), 사랑의 교제, 사명의 재무장, 정보와 전략의 상호교류 그리고 영적, 인적, 재정적, 시간적 선교역량의 촉진(Catalyzing), 동원(Mobilizing), 번식(Multiplying)을 도모하여 한 목표인 세계복음화의 미완성 과업(Unfinished Task of World Evangelization) 성취를
위한 새 지평을 창출하는 동반자 협력선교의 대광장이 될 것이다.
그리고 주 예수 그리스도와 상실된 영혼들을 향한 거룩한 불길이 타오르는 오순절적 성령폭발의 현장이 될 것이며, 고통하는 인류공동체률 향한 하나닝의 고통으로 인하여 마치 불이 바람에 시달리듯 우리의 성령이 그렇게 시달리게 될 위대한 고통의 축제가 될 것이다.
선교는 「예수운동」(Jesus Movement)이다. 「생명운동」이다.
생명의 불길이다.
선교는 대회(Conference)나, 과업(Task)이나 전략(Strategy)이나 사역(Ministry)이기 이전에 생명에 대한 감동이며, 열정이며, 끓어오르는 연민이며, 타오르는 사명감이다.
호흡하는 생명은 누구나 지상에서 성령의 불을 경험하지 못하면 장차 지옥에서 유황불을 경험해야 된다는 이 한가지 준엄한 사실로 인하여 지금 우리들의 심장이 타오르는 선교의 불에 고통하며 시달리고 있는 것이다!
하나님의 사람들이여!
불타시겠는가?
왕이 오시는 그날까지!

여기에 이 위대한 비전과 함께 제3차 한인세계선교대회가 지향하는 일곱가지 선교과제(Mission Task)가 있다‘
1. 「예수 그리스도의 유일성」과 도전받는 복음주의 선교운동의 긴박성 재천명
기독교는 초창기부터 「예수 그리스도의 유일성」 (Uniqueness of Jesus Christ)에 대한 사탄의 치열한 공격으로 말미암아 적대시하는 로마제국의 불과 피의 박해에 직면하게 되었다.
예수 그리스도의 이름을 배반치 않기 위해 죽도록 충성하는 순교자의 장엄한 행렬이 끝없이 줄을 이었고, 사탄은 예수의 증인들의 피에 취해서 광란의 기독교 박멸공작을 전개했다.
그리하여 기독교는 지난 2000년 간 무려 420여회의 순교적 극한상황에 처했었다. 10만명 이상 순교한 상황이 56회. 50만명 이상 순교한 상황이 20회, 100만명 이상 순교한 상황도 12회나 발생했다. 순교자 총계는 무려 4천만명에 달하며, 지금도 세계 도처에서 매년 평균 17만명의 순교자가 「예수 그리스도의 유일성」을 위해 피를 뿌리고 있다,
그러나 생명의 불꽃은 핍박을 받으면 받을수록 더욱 더 치혈하게 타오르는 법이 아닌가? 예수 그리스도의 피로써 탄생한 그의 몸된 교회는 순교성도틀의 피로써 이렇게 성장해왔다.
「예수 그리스도의 유일성」, 그것은 기독교의 생명이며 온 인류의 생명이다.
초대교회의 져 위대한 성도들을 보라!
주 예수 그리스도를 위해 부모도, 처자도. 재산도, 명예도, 공민권도, 목숨조차도 포기해버련 순교적 신앙 이하의 신앙을 가진 사람이 없었다. 공동묘지 땅굴 속에서 무려 300여년간이나 카타콤 생활을 하며,끓는 기름 가마에 던져지고, 말뚝에 묶여 화형을 당하고, 원형극장 콜로세움에서 굶주린 사자에게 물려 죽으면서도 찬송을 부르면서 죽어 갔던 사람들!
저 위대한 순교적 복음주의자들의 심장을 불태웠던 그것이 무엇이었는가?
「예수 그리스도의 유일성」을 증거하는 성령의 불길이었다!
주 예수 그리스도의 심장이 파열되었다.
그리고 물과 피가 쏟아졌다. 그 사랑이 우리를 놀라게 한다.
그 사랑이 우리를 을이게 한다.
그 사랑이 오늘도 우리들의 심장에 불을 지른다.
주 예수 그리스도에 대한 절대화가 지상과 지신에 대한 상대화롤 가능케 한다.
「예수 그리스도의 유일성」은 구원받은 성도의 절대적 신앙고백이며, 교회의 초석(foundation rock)이며, 선교의 심장(Heart of Missions)이다.
그러나 현대사회의 시대정신은 어떠한가?
종교적 신학적 혼합주의, 세속주의, 자유주의, 인본주의, 물질주의 등 날로 범람하는 다원화현상으로 말미암아 오늘날 복음주의 신앙과 신학 그리고 선교운동은 어느 시대보다 강한 도전을 받고있다.
다원론자(Pluralist)들은 기독교를 많은 종교 가운데 한 종파로. 예수 그리스도를 많은 길 가운데 한 길로 치부하며, 우리 복음주의자들을 주관적, 독선적, 배타적 종교관의 희생자들로 비판한다.
사탄의 오른 팔이 복음의 심장부를 파고드는 것이다.
그러므로 제3차 한인세계선교대회는 세계복음화의 지상명령자이며 총사령관이신 예수 그리스도의 유일성을 확고부동한 구원의 진리와 선교의 명제로 불기둥처럼 선포해야 하며, 「그가 오실 때까지 오직 예수 그리스도만 전파할」(Proclaim Christ until He comes!) 것을 우리들의 최우선 과제로 제시해야 한다.
그것이 도전받는 복음주의 선교운동의 사명이요, 영광이다.
「예수 그리스도의 유일성」
그것만이 우리들의 유일한 생명이요, 유일한 신앙고백이요, 유일한 존재이며 도전받는 복음주의 선교운동을 위한 우리들의 유일한 도전장일 것이다.
2 한인세계선교운동의 영적쇄신과 재무장을 위한 성령폭발
성령(Holy Spirit)은 「선교의 영」(Mission Spirit)이며, 선교는 「성령의선교」(Mission of Spirit)이다.
선교의 주체는 성령이며, 사람은 성령의 병기에 지나지 않는다. 그러므로 교회의 성령충만은 언제나 선교적 각성과 도전과 헌신과 동원으로 직결되어야 하며, 선교의 불길은 언제나 성령의 기름에 의해 점화되고 계속 타 올라야 한다.
사탄의 간교한 궤휼은 하나님의 복음운동을 가로막지 못할 때 그 운동을 가차없이 더렵히는 일을 한다. 사탄이 만약 그 운동만 앞에 내세우고 그 운동의 영은 뒷전으로 물러가게 할 수만 있다면 그는 그 영적 운동을 가차없이 물질화시켜서 철저히 부패시키고야 말 것이다.
그러므로 선교운동의 세속화와 물질화에서 그 운동을 구출해내는 유일한 길은 선교사역자들의 영적쇄신과 성령충만에 있다.
우리가 하나님의 나라와 영광을 위해 무엇을 한다 할지라도 우리는 그의 영적원칙(Spiritual Principles)에서 절대로 떠날 수 없다.
하나님의 영적원칙을 떠난 어떠한 운동이나 그 전술전략도 하나님의 축복을 기대할 수 없다.
하나님은 「우리가 무엇올 하느냐」(What we do) 보다도 「우리가 누구냐'」(What we are)에 더욱 관심을 두신다.
우리들 선교사역자는 하나님의 전권대사로서 우리의 사역도 중요하지만 우리의 존재는 더욱 중요하다. 그러므로 우리를 선교사역자의 영적쇄신과 충만은 세계복음화운동의 핵심적 요소이다.
무엇이 전도의 문을 열겠는가?
무엇이 선교현장에서 이교도들의 마음을 열겠는가?
막강한 조직력도, 효과적인 전략도, 풍부한 재정적 지원도 마침내 이교도의 벽을 허물고 복음의 문을 열고 우상숭배의 마음에 감동을 부어 예수 그리스도를 심는 결정적 힘은 되지 못한다.
오직 성령께서 그 일을 행하시며 성령은 선교사역자들의 영적쇄신, 신앙적 단련, 도덕적 무장, 복음적 설교, 구령의 열정, 기도의 헌신, 희생적 사랑 등을 사용하여 그 일을 행하신다.
그러므로 선교운동의 불길은 끊임없는 성령의 기름부으심으로 말미암아 계속 타올라야 하며, 선교사역자들은 끊임없는 성령의 재충만으로 말미암아 하나님의 강한 군사로 계속 무장돼야 하지 않겠는가?
제3차 한인세계선교대회는 참여한 모든 선교동반자들의 영적각성과 쇄신과 충만. 그리고 영적 재무장을 위한 성령폭발의 현장이 되며, 사도행전적인 「하나님의 사건」이 되기를 열망한다.

한인세계선교역량의 결집과 동반자적 협력선교의 대광장
진정한 협력(genuine cooperation)은 진정한
능력(genuine power)이다. 협력만큼 큰 능력이
있겠는가?
최고의 능률은 자유인들의 자발적 협력에 의해 결정된다. 세계복음화운동의
능률도 「그리스도의 자유인들」의 자발적 협력에 의해 결정될 것이다.
「세계복음화」(World Evangelization)의
약자가 WE인 것처럼 선교는 「우리(WE)」가 하는 일이지
「나」(I) 혼자
할 수 있는 일이 아니다.
우리의 협력정신과 공동체훈련의 결핍으로 말미암아 교회의 영적 통일성이 파괴되고 선교운동의 집중력이
훼손될 때마다 승리는 마귀에게 넘어가는 것이 아니겠는가?
세계복음화의 가장 큰 장애물은 바로 그 운동을 하는 사람들의 자기중심적 개인주의로 인한 소아적 갈들, 경쟁, 대립, 분열, 분쟁이라는 슬픈 사실을 절감하고 1974년 제1차 로잔세계복음화대회, 1989년 제2차 마닐라/로잔세계복음화대회, 그리고 1995년 5월 214개국 대표 4662명이
서울에 집결한 「세계복음화지구촌전략대회」(GCOWE’95)를 통해 「동반자협력선교」(Partnership Mission)의 필요성과 당위성은 말할 수 없이 강조되어 왔다.
이렇게 2000년대 지상명령 완성의 공동목표와 공동전선
구축을 위한 범세계적 범교회적 협력체제가 강화되고 있는 이 시대에 우리 한인선교세력들의 동반자적 협력문제 역시 핵심적 과제라 아니할 수 없다.
우리는 분파의식이 농후한 민족성의 비극을 극복해야 한다. 「한국교회는
영적 활력은 배웠어도 영적 연합은 배우지 못했다」고 지적한 어느 서구신 학자의 비판을 우리는 반드시 극복해야 한다.
우리 한국교회는 1980년대 교회 성장율 세계 1위의 위대한 촉복을 받았다. 만약 한국교회가 세계복음화의 긴박한
지상명령을 위해 소아적 개인주의 교파주의 민족주의를 초월하고, 범교회적으로 총동원되어 협력선교의 큰
길을 열고 타문화권선교의 큰 문을 열기만 한다면. 2000년대는 선교사 파송율 세계 1위의 진실로 위대한 축복을 받지 않겠는가?
할렐루야, 주를 찬양하자!
하나님은 이미 한국교회의 협력선교를 위한 위대한 가능성의 지평을 열어주셨다.
신학적 견해, 신앙적 노선, 교회적 입장, 교파적 배경을 초월하여 오직 세계복음화를 위한 한민족의
시대적 사명과 북미주 한인교회의 존재이유를 확인하고 선양하자는 순수한 동기와 열정으로 1.500명의
선교동반자들이 KWMC의 이름으로 회동한 1988년도 제1차 한인세계선교대회, 그리고 다시금 한국교회의 긴박한 선교적 사명과
동반자협력전신을 재확인하고 재선양하기 위해 2.500명이 재집결한 1992년도
제2차 한인세계선교대회, 그 역사적 사건의 현장에서 하나닝의
음성은 우리에게 무엇을 말씀하셨는가?
그리고 이제 다시금 2000년대 지구촌완전복음화의 위대한
비전과 긴박성을 재확인하고 3.500여 북미주 한인교회의 선교적 대각생과 총동원을 강권하시는 성령의
독촉을 받고 3.000명 한인세계선교역량이 총집결하는 금번 제3차
한인세계선교대회. 이 사상최대 협력선교의 대광장에서 하나님의 음성은 우리에게 무엇을 말씀하시겠는가?
그러므로 제3차 한인세계선교대회는 한국교회 사상 최대의
한인세계선교세력이 총집결하는 광장이므로 진실로 동반자적 협력선교의 대광장이 되기를 열망한다.

2000년대 한인선교사의 좌표설정과 범세계적 연대성 형성을 위한 공동모색
세계복음화운동이 예루살렘에서 이리안 자야까지(from
Jerusalem to lrian Jaya) 대행군을 계속해 올 때 하나닙은 복음의 전령들을 친히 차출하시고、성령의 선교적 충동으로
말미암아 그들의 영혼과 심장 ,전인격과 전생애가 세계복음화를 향한 하나님의 비전으로 불타게 하셨다.
할렐루야. 주를 찬양하자!
오대양 육대주,사막과 바다, 산악과 평야. 도시와 촌락, 감옥과
유형지에서 구령의 열정을 불태우며. 복음의
철장권세로 사탄의 면상을 후려치며, 생명을 포기하며. 고난을
찬미하며, 「매를 맞으며, 자지 못하고 주리며 목마르고 굶고
춥고 헐벗으며」 (고후 11:23-27) 예수 그리스도의
교회를 위해 항상 심령에 눌린 바 되며. 하나님의 나라와 영광을 확장하는 오직 그 하나의 기쁨으로 십자가를
높이 들고, 역사를 관통하여 달려온 저 장엄한 선교사의 대행군을 보라!
보라.
기독교 2.000년의
장구한 세월을
성령과 함께 달려 온
저 위대한 복음의 전권대사들.
저 고독한 믿음의 영웅들.
저 장엄한 하나님의
창조적 소수들의 대행군을!
그들의 눈은
역사를 꿰뚫고,
그들의 입은 복음을 외치며,
그들의 손은
인류의 고통을 쓰다듬고,
그들의 발은
귀신의 처소를 짓밟으며
그들의 피는
예수그리스도의 교회에 쏟아지며,
그들의 영은
세계복음화의 비전으로
불타고 있지 않은가!
저 장엄한 선교사의 대행군은 오늘도 오대양 육대주에서 서구선교사 85.000여명과
제3세계 선교사 55,000여명 도합 140.000여명의 개신교선교사들로 계속되고 있다.
그리고 한국교회와 북미주한인교회가 파송한 4.000여명의
한인선교사들, 그리고 이렇게 KWMC'96 협력선교의 대광장에
찾아온 800명 우리의 자랑스러운 한인선교사들로 그 대행군은 계속되고 있다.
그러므로 우리는 제3차 한인세계선교대회와 제7차 세계한국선교사대회가 2000년대 한인선교사의 좌표설정과 범세계적
연대성 형성을 위한 공동모색을 통해 세계복음화운동의 새 지평을 여는 기념비적 사건이 되기를 희망한다

2000년대 북미주 한인선교사 1000명 파송과 대학생선교운동의 기폭제
하나님의 「선교의 영」(Mission Spirit)은 19세기 말엽 위대한 복음 전도자 무디(D. L. Moody)와 피어슨 (A. T. Pierson) 등의 영적 감동력. 프린스톤대학 졸업생
로버트 윌더(Robert P. Wilder)의 선교적 비전, 코넬
대학생 존 못트(John R. Mott)의 천재적 조직력을 사용하여 당시 북아메리카대륙을 풍미한 「대학생
자원해외선교운동」(Student Volunteer Movement)을 일으키셨다.
당시 성령의 선교적 충동에 도전받은 젊은 복음주의자들은 「우리 세대에 세계복음화를!」(World
Evangelizatíon in Our Generation!) 이라는 찬란한 비전성명(Vision
Statement)을 외쳤다. 그들은 서기 1900년까지
세계복음화의 미완성과업(Unifinished Task)을 끝내자고 하는 비장한 환상과 열정을 불태우며, 동시대 교회들의 선교적 대각성을 독촉하며, 오대양 육대주로 뛰쳐나갔다.
그들의 위대한 비전은 세계선교운동사에 빛나는 대약진의 장(章)을 기록했다.
그러나 복음의 능력이 혼잡한 언어를 땅끝까지 정복하는 지상명령의 완성을 보지 못한 채 그들은 사명의
쟁기를 손에서 내려놓고, 역사의 휘장 뒤로 물러갔다.
그렇게 그들은 갔다. 역사에서 퇴장했다. 그러나 세계복음화를 향한 불타는 비전은 지금도 사라지지 않았다.
그 비전은 지금도 살아 있다. 그 비전은 지금도 역사를
만들고 있다. 그 심장을 불태웠던 그 위대한 비전, 그것이 지금 여기 이렇게
우리들의 심장을 불태우고 있지 않은가!
「우리 세대에
세계복음화를!」
「우리 세대에
예수 그리스도를
모든 종족에게!」
이제 그것은 그들의 비전이 아니라, 우리들의 비전이다.
제3차 한인세계선교대회,
이 역사적 사건의 현장에서 이 시대 세계복음화를 위한 하나님의 군사로 동원명령을 받은 우리 새벽이슬 같은 젊은이들의 기도 속에, 증언 속에, 고백 속에, 대회
속에 분명히 「우리 세대에 세계복음화를!」 이라고 하는 비장한 결단과 헌신과 열망의 불길이 타오르는
것을 우리는 볼 것이다.
그리고 이 위대한 「세계 비전」(World Vision)의
열망이 북미주에서 그리고 한반도에서 요원의 불길처럼 한민족의 젊은 심장들을 불태우며 확산된다면 마침내 전세계를 석권하는 「한인대학생 자원 해외선교운동」(Korean Student Volunteer Movement)이 폭발하는 것도 가능치 않겠는가?
19세기말
선교적 선풍을 일으켰던 「대학생 자원 해외선교운동」(SVM)의 위대한 신화를 20세기말 한민족의 젊은 후예들을 통해 다시금 찬란하게 재현시킬 수 있는 「역사창조의 가능성」들, 「하나님의 기폭제」들이 여기에 모인 것이다.
그리고 하나님께서 북미주 전지역의 신학교, 대학교, 그리고 한인교회에 숨겨두신 젊은 「엘리야의 700명」이 오늘 여기에
동석한 1000명 자랑스러운 선교소명자들이 들어 올리는 봉화불을 기다릴 것이다.
KWMC는
이 「예수의 젊은이들」을 위한 모성적 역할을 다해야 할 것이다.
왜냐하면, 이들이 바로 역사의 미래이며, 세계선교운동의 견인차(牽引車)이며, 차세대의 주자(走者)이기
때문이다.
제3차 한인세계선교대회는 2000년대 북미주 한인선교사 1000명 파송을 위한 대학생청년운동의
기폭제가 될 것을 확신한다.

북미주 한인교회의 선교적 대각성과 총동원을 위한 평신도선교운동의 활성화
1974년
제1차 로잔대회의 「로잔언약해설」(Lausanne Covenant
Commentary)에서 존 스토트(John Stott)는 「온 교회의 총동원 없이 온
세계의 복음화는 불가능하다」(Unless the Whole Church is Mobilized, the
Whole World is not likely to be Reached)고 외치며 세계선교를 위한 세계교회의 각성과 헌신을 호소했다.
그리고 1989년 마닐라에서 열린 제2차 로잔대회도 하나님은 「온 세계를 향해 온전한 복음을 전하도록 온 교회를 부르신다」(Calling the Whole Church to take the Whole Gospel to the Whole
World)고 선언하며, 세계복음화를 위한 전체 교회의 협력과 총동원을 촉구했다.
선교는 전쟁이다.
하나님의 나라와 영광을 확장하기 위한 성령과 사탄의 치열한 영적 전쟁이다.
세계선교는 총사령관 예수 그리스도의 권세있는 지상명령이므로 최후의 승리가 보장된 전쟁이긴 하지만 그러나
우리 병사들의 생명과 시간과 재능과 물질과 노력에 대한 최고의 희생과 헌신을 요구하는 전쟁이다.
이 거룩한 전쟁을 휘나 전방전투부대에 투입된 하나님의 선교사들이 오늘도 피와 땀과 눈물을 흘리고 있지
않는가?
그리므로 후방지원부대인 교회는 이 전쟁의 치열성과 긴박성을 깨닫고 분발하여 총동원되어야 한다.
전쟁은 전방을 향한 후방의 병력보충과 전력지원 없이는 승리는 쟁취할 수 없다.
그런데 후방의 총동원은 사실상 교회의 99%를 점하고 있는
평신도들의 선교적 각성과 헌신과 동원과 후원을 의미하는 것이다.
평신도를 깨워야 한다!
교회의 절대다수인 평신도를 향한 선교적 계몽운동이 세계복음화전략의 필수조건이다.
고통하는 세계를 향해 그들의 눈이 열리고 그들의 손과 발이 신속히 움직일 때 측량할 수 없는 선교역량이
창출될 것이며, 마침내 물이 바다를 덮음 같이 복음이 온 지면을 덮을 것이다.
그리므로 제3차 한인세계선교대회를 통해 북미주 한인교회의
선교적 대각성과 총동원을 위한 평신도선교운동의 활성화가 요원의 불길처럼 일어나기를 열망한다.

세계복음화 미완성과업을 위한 북미주 한인교회 300 미전도종족 입양운동과 총체적 북한선교운동의
교두보 구축
세계복음화 완성의 의미는 무엇이며, 지상명령의 「미완성
과업」(Unfinished Task)은 얼마나 남았는가?
세계복음화는 「모든 민족, 온 세상」(마 24:14), 「온 천하, 만민」(막 16:15), 「땅끝까지」(행
1:8), 「모든 족속」(마 28:19)에 대한 복음화를 의미한다. 일찍이 사도 요한은 세계복음화의
환상을 보고 기록하기를, 「또 보니 다른 천사가 공중에 날아 가는데 땅에 거하는 자들 곧 여러 나라와
족속과 방언과 백성에게 전할 영원한 복음을 가졌더라」(계 14:6)고
했다.
그리므로 「너희는 가서 모든 족속으로 제자를 삼으라」(마
28:19)는 세계복음화의 의미는 구체적으로 종족복음화운동의 개념인 것이다.
언어를 혼잡케 한 바벨탑의 심판 이후로 지구촌의 인류는 수없이 많은 종족들로 분할되었다.
데이빗 바렛(David Barrett)의 조사에 의하면
지구촌은 마치 모자이크처럼 언어와 문화가 다른 무려 24,000여개의 타문화권 종족그룹(Cross-Cultural People Group)들로 구성되었다.
그런데 지구상의 24,000여 종족그룹 가운데 지금까지
약 13,000여 종족그룹이 복음화되었고, 나머지 약 11,000여 종족그룹이 지상명령의 미완성 과업으로 남아있다.
이 11,000여 미전도종족그룹(Unreached People Group)은 복음을 접할 기회가 전무하여 예수 그리스도의 이름을 한번도 들어본
적이 없을 뿐만 아니라 토착교회가 없는 「숨은 종족」(Hidden People)을 말한다.
이 미전도종족(Unreached People)은 주로 10/40창 지역의 30여개국 안에 산재하였으며 현재 60억5천만 인류 가운데 22.5%에
해당하는 13억에 이른다. 이들을 복음화하는 것이 오늘날
범세계적 선교운동들의 최우선 과제이다.
이와 같이 세계복음화의 대상을 통제가능한 단위(Manageable
Units)인 종족그룹별로 분할하여 도전하는 「종족단위 복음화전략」이 1970년 맥가브란(McGavran), 랄프 윈터(Ralph D. Winter), 그리고
로잔운동(Lausanne Movement)을 통해 보편화된 이후 세계복음화의 개념은 막연한 환상이 아니라
갑자기 「한 촌락의 이야기」(talk of the town)가 되었고 손에 잡히는 절대적 가능성의 실상이
되었다.
미전도종족선교는 1930년 중반에 이미 시작된 운동이다.
근대선교운동사를 일별하면 대략 3단계로 전개된다.
1792년
윌리암 케리(William Carey)에 의해 「해안선선교 운동시대」(Coastal
Land Mission Era)가 열렸고, 1865년 허드슨 테일러(Hudson Taylor)에 의해 「내륙선교 운동시대」(Inland Areas
Mission Era)가 열렸고, 1935년 카메론 타운센드(Cameron Townsend)에 의해 「미전도종족 선교시대」(Unreached
People Mission Era)가 열렸다.
그리고 1936년 WEC
선교사 브리어레이(L. G. Brierley)는 최초로 미전도종족그룹(Unreached People)에 대해 전세계적인 조사를 시작했다. 1955년
맥가브란(D.A. McGavran)은 「하나님의 교량」(The
Bridges of God)을 발행하여 종족단위 복음화운동의 개념을 재천명했다.
1974년
제1차 로잔세계복음화 국제대회(Lausanne I
International Congress for World Evangelization)를 통해 이 종족단위복음화의 개념은 일반화되었고
랄프 윈터(Ralph D. Winter)를 비롯한 세계선교미국본부(U.S.
Center for World Mission)의 「미개척선교운동」(Frontier Mission
Movement)을 통해 「서기 2000년까지 모든 종족에게 교회개척을!」(Church for Every People Group by A.D.
2000) 주창하는 이 개념은 한층 더 구체화되었으며 토마스 왕(Thomas Wang), 루이스
부시(Luis Bush) 등 제3세계 선교지도자들을 중심으로
한 「기독교 21세기운동」(A.D. 2000 & Beyond
Movement)을 통해 「서기 2000년까지 모든 족속에게 교회를, 모든 사람에게 복음을!」(A
Church for Every People and Gospel for Every Person by A.D. 2000) 주창하는 이 종족선교개념은 한층 더 현실화되었다.
그러면 어떻게 11,000여 미복음화종족에 대한 미완성
과업을 끝낼 것인가?
첫째, 「서기 2000년까지
11,000여 미전도종족 안에 생동력있고 성장하며 선교적 열정이 충만한 토착교회들을 세우고」(to plant vibrant, growing and mission-minded indigenous churches)
둘째, 「그 토착교회들로 하여금 그들 자신의 종족을 복음화하도록
한다」(let these indigenous churches evangelize their own people)는
것이다.
그리고 현재 약 19억의 기독교인 가운데 복음주의자는 약
5억7천만명, 그들의
복음적 교회는 660만개에 달한다. 만약 이들이 11,000개의 미전도종족을 위해 선교적으로 동원될 수만 있다면, 그래서
600개의 복음적 교회가 한 종족씩만 입양한다면 세계복음화는 통쾌하게 완성되는 것이 아니겠는가!
얼마나 환상적인 산술인가!
만약 이와 같이 「종족입양」전략이 하나의 산술적 계산이 아니라 주 예수 그리스도의 지상명령에 대한
교회의 전폭적 순종과 성령의 선교적 충동으로 말미암아 그대로 적중하기만 한다면 마침내 천국추수(Harvest
of the Kingdom)의 영광은 인류역사 속에 불기둥처럼 나타나는 것이 아니겠는가?
그러므로 제3차 한인세계선교대회를 통해 성령의 미전도종족입양운동을
확산시켜 나가실 것이며 마침내 북미주한인교회는 2000년대까지 300
미전도종족을 입양할 것으로 확신한다.
그리고 북한의 체제붕괴를 예고하는 정치적 경제적 사회적 위기상황과 화급한 식량난 문제 등을 고려한
총체적 북한선교운동을 전개하는 교두보가 구축되어야 할 것이다.

그리고 세계복음화 비상기도운동 제창
기도는 세계선교운동의 최우선 전략이다.
기도의 능력은 불의 세력을 멸하고, 성난 사자의 입에 재갈을
물리고, 난세를 평정하고, 전쟁을 종식시키고, 폭풍우를 달래고, 마귀를 추방하고,
사망의 결박을 풀고, 질병을 치유하며, 태양을
머물게 하고, 우뢰의 진행을 막으며, 죽은 영혼을 소성케
하고, 지구를 복음으로 석권한다.
세계복음화를 위한 교회들의 기도가 불타기 시작하면 세계는 변혁되고 천사들은 더욱 능력있게 움직이고
더욱 신속히 날며 하나님의 복음운동은 급속한 추진력을 얻을 것이다.
우리가 잃어버린 영혼들을 사랑하는가!
우리는 기도해야 한다.
바로 그 영혼들을 위해!
우리가 과연 고통하는 세계를 향한 하나님의 고통하는 사랑을 느끼는가?
우리는 기도해야 한다. 바로 그 고통하는 세계를 위해!
World Vision의 창설자 밥 피얼즈(Bob Piers)는 늘 지구본(globe)을
가슴에 끌어안고 울며 이렇게 기도했다.
「아버지여, 오늘도 아버지의 심장을 아프게 하는 고통이
무엇입니까? 그것이 바로 종의 심장을 아프게 하는 고통이 되게 하옵소서!」
1723년
이미 스코트랜드의 기도의 사람 로버트 밀러(Robert Miller)는 미개인 개종을 위한 중보기도운동을
부르짖었고, 20년 후에는 대영제국 식민지 전역에 원주민을 위한 200개
이상의 「기도그룹」(Prayer Group)을 작동시켰다.
1747년
북아메리카의 영적 거인 조나난 에드워드(Jonathan Edward)는 영적 부흥과 그리스도의 왕국
확장을 위한 비상기도를 촉구하며 「세계복음화 비상기도동맹」 결성을 주장했다. 그 결과 뉴잉글랜드 대각성운동과
아메리칸 인다안선교운동이 일어난 것이다.
18세기 영국에
「기도부대」(Unit of Prayer)를 일으킨 윌리엄 캐리(William
Carey), 앤드류 훌러(Andreu Filler), 존 셧클리크(John Succliffee).
1794년
미국 모든 교파의 목사들에게 「기도탄원서」(Plea for Prayers)를 보낸 이삭 박커스(Isaac Backus).
1799년
캔키에서 「기도합주회」(Concert of Prayer) 운동을 일으킨 제임스 맥그레디(James McGready).
1858년
뉴욕시에서 80만 인구 중 불과 6명으로 시작된 합동기도운동이
마침내 「기도의 사태」(Landslide of Prayer) 현상을 일으켰던 예레미야 렌피어(Jeremiah Lanphier).
뉴욕의 「기도사태」는 시카고로 번져 디 엘 무디(D.L. Moody)를
불질렀고 당시 3천만의 미국 인구 중 1년에 1백만 이상을 구원시켰으며 이 북아메리카의 부흥운동은 계속 영국으로 남인도로 남아프리카로 퍼져 나갔다.
1905년
예일(Yale)대학은 25%의 학생들이 기도그룹에 가입했으며
뉴저지의 아틀란틱시티는 6만 인구 중 50명만 불신자로 남고
전원 구원받는 역사가 있었고 오레곤주 포틀랜드는 200개 이상의 상점이 오전 11시부터 오후 2시까지는 일제히 기도를 위해 문을 닫았다.
영국 웨일스의 한 청년 에반 로버츠(Evan Roberts)의
고독한 기도의 투쟁은 마침내 웨일스에서 대영제국으로, 노르웨이로, 스웨덴으로, 덴마크로, 독일로, 캐나다로, 오스트랄리아로, 뉴질랜드로, 아프리카,로 브라질로, 멕시코로, 칠레로
끝없이 산불처럼 오대양 육대주를 휩쓸었다.
어떻게 이런 위대한 역사가 일어났는가? 간단하다. 사람들은 기도했고 하나님은 이루셨다!
언제나 기도운동은 부흥운동을 촉발시켰고 부흥운동은 선교운동을 촉발시켰다!
언제나 시작은 기도운동이었다!
기도의 투쟁은 사탄과 세상을 향한 투쟁에서 승리를 보장한다!
세계복음화는 어떻게 완성될 수 있는가? 선교운동의 저변확대, 다시 말하면 교회의 99%를 점하고 있는 평신도들의 선교적 각성과
헌신과 동원과 후원 없이는 결코 불가능하다.
뿌리 없는 나무가 쓰러지듯 뿌리 없는 운동은 열매가 없다. 선교운동이
평신도운동으로 연결될 때만 교회의 선교적 동원은 가능한 것이 아닌가?
교회의 절대다수인 평신도들의 선교적 개발과 동원, 그리고
일선 선교사들을 위한 영적, 인적, 물적 지원확대, 그리고 선교운동 자체의 활성화, 그리고 무엇보다도 「선교의 영」(Mission Spirit)이신 성령의 불길 같은 역사를 위한 최선의 전략, 최우선의
전략은 무엇인가?
「기도선교운동」이라고 믿는다.
더욱이 기도의 열정은 한국교회의 특별한 은사이며 영적 자부심이 아닌가? 한국교회 4만5천여 재단에
그리고 북미주 한인교회의 3500여 재단에 끝없이 타오르는 새벽기도,
철야기도, 금식기도의 불길 속에 세계선교의 미완성 과업이 불쏘시개처럼 타오르기만 한다면
세계복음화는 신속한 추진력을 얻을 것이다.
그러므로 「제3차 한인세계선교대회」는 한국교회를 향해 「세계복음화
비상기도운동」을 제창하는 바이다.

Jesus Christ for Every People in Our Times!
In these final years of the 20th
century, we evangelical Christians sense an urgent call of the Holy Spirit for
world evangelization. I am certain that the 3rd KWM’96 is the Vision
Statements of God for the Korean Christians of these times to be greatly aware
of and participation in world missions. In this historical conference, a public
square of partnership in missions, more than 800 Korean Missionaries as well as
pastors, theologians, laity, men and women, young adults and other mission
partners will gather together. Their Fusion of Vision, Concert of Prayer,
Fellowship of Love, Re-armament of Calling, Exchange of Information and
Strategy, Re-assessment of Spiritual and Man Power, Catalyzing, Mobilizing,
Multiplying of the financial and timely resources, will achieve our one goal,
the Unfinished Task of World Evangelization.
I believe this conference will also be the
place where the Pentecostal explosion of the Holy Spirit will touch the lost.
Mission is Jesus’ Movement and Life
Movement. Missions is the flame of life. Mission is neither a conference nor a
Task, Strategy or Ministry, it is rather a passion for life and a fiery sense
of calling.
The fact that those who have not been born
again by the help of the Holy Spirit will suffer in the fiery chamber of hell,
urges us to be on fire for mission.

There are seven Mission Tasks to be dealt
with in the 3rd Korean World Missions ’96.
1.
To Recognize the Urgency of Evangelical Missions and the Uniqueness of Jesus
Christ
From the beginning of the history of Christianity
the Uniqueness of Jesus Christ has continually been challenged by Satan, and
the early Christians faced a bloody and fiery persecution of the Roman Empire.
Jesus Christ’s heart was destroyed. And
water and blood were shed for us. That love is still putting our hearts on
fire. “The Uniqueness if Jesus Christ” is the confession of faith of the saved,
the rock of the foundation of the church and the Heart of Missions.
However, what is the spirit of the present
time? Religious and theological synchronization, secularism, liberalism,
humanism, materialism and pluralism have assaulted the evangelical faith and
the mission movement.
The pluralists consider Christianity as one
of many religions, Jesus Christ as one of many ways, and us, the evangelicals,
as the victims of a self-righteous and exclusive religious concept. The right
hand of satan is crawling into the heart of the gospel.
Therefore, this 3rd KWM’96 must
proclaim Jesus Christ as the captain of the Great Commission for world
evangelization, and we must also confess the Uniqueness of Jesus Christ as the
absolute truth for salvation and the theme of missions, and vow “to Proclaim
Christ until He comes!” as our priority. This is the calling of the evangelical
missions movement.
The Uniqueness of Jesus Christ.” This is
the only truth for us, and our only confession of faith, and Jesus Christ is
the only person whom we desire.
2.
To Experience an Explosion of the Holy Spirit for Spiritual Renewal and
Re-equipment of the Korean World Missions Movement
The Holy Spirit is the Mission Spirit, and
the mission is the Mission of the Spirit. The core of missions is the Holy
Spirit, and man is merely an instrument. Therefore, the church must be filled
with the Holy Spirit, and always be involved with the awareness, challenge,
sacrifice and participation of missions. The flame of missions must be set and
kept on fire by the Spirit.
Satan’s cunning strategies are to pollute
the missions movement when he fails to block it. If satan would allow only the
work of the mission movement without the spirit, he could absolutely corrupt
the movement. The only way to avoid that destruction is by spiritual renewal
and by having mission workers filled with the Holy Spirit.
Even though we are striving to do the work
of God and His Kingdom, we can never succeed without His Spiritual principles.
God does not bless movements or strategies
because of what we do, but because of what we are, therefore, the spiritual
renewal of the mission workers is the core of World Evangelization.
What would open the door to World
Evangelization? What would open the hearts of non-believers in the mission
field?
No effective strategies, abundant financial
support, and great administrative skills would open the hearts of the unreached
and break down the walls so that Jesus Christ can enter.
Only the Holy Spirit can achieve the work
of God. He completes the work through spiritual renewal, discipline, moral
training, evangelical preaching/teaching, passion for souls, and the fervent
prayer of the mission workers.
Therefore, it is needless to say that the
mission workers must be continually recharged and filled with the Holy Spirit.
I personally desire that the 3rd
KWM’96 will be the place where all the mission workers and partners experience
the spiritual renewal of the explosion of the Holy Spirit, and bring the book
of Acts to life.
3.
To Provide a Platform for Maximizing the Mission Force and for Forming
Partnerships for the Korean World Mission Movement
Genuine cooperation is genuine power.
There is no power stronger than cooperation.
The most effectiveness comes from voluntary cooperation. The effectiveness for
World Evangelization is determined by the voluntary cooperation of free men and
women in Christ.
As the abbreviation of World Evangelization
is WE, WE must do world missions, not I.
Whenever there is a lack of the spirit of
cooperation and community training, it destroys the spiritual unity of the
church, and we give the victory to satan. We are aware that self-centeredness,
childish conflicts, competition, division among mission workers has been the
greatest hindreance to World Evangelization. Therefore, the importance of
Partnership in Mission has been emphasized throughout the 1st
Lausanne World Mission Conference in 1974, the 2nd Manila / Lausanne
Conference in 1989, and GCOWE in 1995 for which 4,662 delegates from 214
countries participated in Seoul.
During these periods of coming together to
become strengthened in order to achieve the goal of World Evangelization, the
Korean Mission partners need to focus on this cooperative mission effort.
We Koreans need to overcome the national
character defect of disunity. Let us not forget the justified criticism of a
western critic. He said, ‘the Korean church has learned spiritual power, but
not spiritual unity.’
The Korean church was blessed with the
highest church growth in the world in the 1980’s. If we overcame our
self-centered and individualistic denominationalism and nationalism, and begin
to cooperate with each other in order to open the door to other cultures’ mission
fields, we might be blessed once again as the country with the highest number
of missionaries in the world.
Hallelujah! Sing praises to the Lord!
God has already demonstrated the
possibility of a cooperative missions movement among Korean churches.
Overcoming the differences between the
denominations, theological backgrounds and faith, and realizing our Korean
identity wild living in North America, 1,500 mission partners came together
under name KWMC in 1988 with a pure motivation and passion for World
Evangelization (1st KWM’88). 2,500 gathered again in 1992 to
reaffirm the urgency of the cooperative partnership mission (2nd
KWM’92). Throughout those historical events what did God reveal to us?
More than 3,000 mission partners who have
been deeply touched by the power of the Holy Spirit and realize the urgency of
the great vision for global evangelization will gather again for this 3rd
KWM’96, what will God tell us through this historical conference, the platform
of partnering together?
I hope that KWM’96 will be the center for
collecting and maximizing all resources and power for the cooperative effort of
World Evangelization.

To Plan Strategies of Korean Missionaries for the 21st Century and
to Create a Global Unity
God has chosen the workers as the carriers
of His gospel, and helps them to be on fire with the Spirit for World
Evangelization from Jerusalem to Irian Jaya.
Hallelujah! Sing Praises to the Lord!
Let’s look at the march of the martyrs who
have brought down satan’s kingdom, sacrificing their lives, joyfully enduring
their suffering for the Lord, ‘being hungry, thirsty, cold, naked, beaten, and
without sleep’ (II Cor. 11:23-27).
They have always felt indebted to Christ’s
church while joyfully carrying out the will of God.
Look!
The ambassadors of the Gospel
Who have come a long way
2,000 years,
With the Holy Spirit,
The lonely men and women of faith,
The march of the chosen.
Their eyes
Penetrate history,
Their mouth
Proclaim the gospel,
Their hands
Console suffering humanity,
Their feet
Trample upon the evil forces,
Their blood
Shed on Christ’s church,
And their spirits
Burning with their holy vision
Of World Evangelization!
The march for missions is being continued
with 85,000 western missionaries, 55,000 third world missionaries and 140,000
protestant missionaries in the whole world. Now the 4,000 Korean missionaries
sent out from Korea and North America, and 800 Korean missionaries who join
this conference will continue to march.
I hope that the 3rd KWMC and the
7th World Korean Missionary Conference will crystalize the goals for
the Korean missionaries and discover global unity for World Evangelization.

To Support the College Student and Young Adult Mission Movement in Sending out
1,000 Korean Missionaries in North America by A.D. 2000
The Mission Spirit of God touched the heart
of D.L. Moody at the end of the 19th century, A.T. Pierson with
spiritual power, Robert P. Wilder with the vision of mission, and John R. Mott
with genius administrative skills, From these men the Student Volunteer
Movement was born.
The young evangelicals at that time
declared the Vision Statement – “World Evangelization in Our Generation.” They
ran out into the world proclaiming the urgency to complete the Unfinished Task
by the 1900’s. Their great vision was a turning point for World Evangelization.
However, they did not witness the
completion of their vision, but to this day it has never diminished. That
vision is still very much alive. That vision is dominating the history of the
world. That vision of missions which set their hearts on fire is burning our
hearts today for missions.
Jesus Christ
For Every People
In Our Times!
During KWM’96 we will witness the passion
of the youth through their prayer, testimonies, confessions, and dialogues, we
will hear them cry out to the whole world: “World Evangelization in Our
Generation!”
Isn’t it possible for the Korean Student
Volunteer Movement to break out when young Korean students in Korea and North America
experience the Spirit of Mission with the desire for the World Missions?
Just like the Student Volunteer Movement at
the end of the 19th century the urgent call of God will to revive a
movement for this century by the Korean descendants like ‘the 7,000 for young
Elijah,’ there are those who have been hidden by God in colleges, Bible
colleges and seminaries, who are waiting for the signal fire lit by the 1,000
young Korean students who will join in this conference.
KWMC must do its part with motherly
guidance and love, to assist these ‘young people of Jesus.’ For they are the
future of our history, the tractor for the World Mission Movement and the
runner for the next generation.
I believe that KWM’96 will be the impetus
for the fulfillment of World Evangelization to begin by sending out 1,000
Korean young people in the coming century.
6.
To Bring about a Great Awakening and Full Participation in Missions and Lay
Mobilization of Korean Churches in North America
In 1974, at the First Lausanne Mission
Conference, John Stott made an appeal in the Lausanne Covenant Commentary
“Unless the whole church is mobilized, the whole world is not likely to be
reached,” to world church. At the Second Lausanne Mission Conference in 1989,
he proclaimed that “Calling the Whole Church to take the Whole Gospel to the
Whole World.”
I strongly desire that the fire for the
mobilization of the lay mission and great awakening of mission among North
American Korean churches will be lit.

To Adopt 300 Unreached People by Korean Churches in North America and to be a
Bridge for Missions to North Korea for the Unfinished Task of World
Evangelization
What
would it mean to have world evangelization complete, and how much of the
unfinished task still remains to be done?
World evangelization means to reach out to
“all nations, the whole world”(Matthew 24:14), “the ends of the earth”(Acts
1:8), and “all tribes”(Matthew 28:19). The apostle John wrote on the phenomenon
of world evangelization in accordance to the vision he saw: “Then I saw another
angel flying in midair, and he had the eternal gospel to proclaim to those who
live on the earth – to every nation, tribe, language and people.”(Revelation
14:6)
Therefore, what it says in Matthew 28:19,
“go and make disciples of all nations” implies evangelization of tribes.
The tower of Bable has caused many tribes
to be scattered over all the earth.
David Barrett states that the globe
consists of around 24,000 Cross-Cultural People Groups that have different
languages and cultural backgrounds. About 13,000 out of 24,000 tribes have been
evangelized and 11,000 tribes are left unreached.
Since these 11,000 unreached people groups
have never heard of the gospel, they not only never heard of the name of Jesus
Christ but they are also hidden people without any indigenous churches. These
unreached peoples are scattered throughout the 10/40 window area in 30 nations.
To evangelize those nations is our priority
and the number of people involved is 1.3 billion, which is 23% of the whole
worlds population of 5.75 billion.
D.A. McGavran and Ralph D. Winter implanted
the trabal unit mission strategy in 1970’s, and the outcome of the Lausanne
Movement made the strategy universal. World evangelization is no longer a hazy
pipe dream but the talk of the town, and it has been taken out of the realm of
impossibility and has become reachable.
The mission to the unreached people is the
movement that began in the mid 1930’s.
Modern mission movements can be divided
into three eras. They are 「The Costal Mission Era」 by William Carey in
1792, 「The Inland Mission Era」
by Hudson Taylor in 1865 and 「The Unreached People
Mission Era」 by Cameron Townsend in 1935.
In 1936 WEC Missionary L.G. Brierley began
his research on The Unreached People Groups, and D.A. McGavran reaffirmed the
concept of the Tribal Unit Mission Movement in his book ‘The Bridges of God’ in
1955.
The concept of the Tribal Unit Mission
Movement became universal due to the outcome of the Lausanne I International
Congress for world evangelization.
It became more crystallized by The Frontier
Mission Movement of Ralph D. Winter and U.S. Center for World Mission and their
motto was “Church for Every People Group by A.D. 2000.”
How can we, then, possibly complete the
mission to the 11,000 unreached people groups, the unfinished task?
First, we need to plant vibrant, growing
and mission-minded indigenous churches among the 11,000 unreached people
groups.
Secondly, we must let these indigenous
churches evangelize their own people.
At the present time, around 570 million out
of 1.9 billion Christians are considered evangelical, and they are from 6.6
million churches. If these churches would utilize their resources (manpower,
finances and spiritual support) for the mission to these 11,000 unreached
people groups and adopt one tribe each by 600 evangelical churches, the world
mission would be fulfilled in a very short time.
What a fantastic calculation! The glory of
the Harvest of the Kingdom of heaven would reveal its power like a pillar of
fire if the evangelical churches of Christ were to completely obey the Spirit

Therefore, the Spirit of Missions will
expand the unreached tribal adoption movement through KWM’96, and it is very
possible that the Korean churches in North America will be able to adopt 300
unreached people groups by the year 2000.
We must create a mission strategy for North
Korea taking into consideration its political, economical and social situation
as well as the shortage of food.

To Plead the Urgent need to Prayer and Spiritual Awakening Movement for World
Evangelization of Korean Churches in North America
Prayer is the best strategy for the mission
movement. The power of prayer overcomes evil, puts bits into the mouths of
enraged lions finishes wars, calms the tempests, drives out demons, breaks the
bondage of death, heals the sick, stops the sun, brings the dead to life and
wins the world with the gospel.
When prayers of the churches for world
missions are set on fire, the world will change, the angels will fly even more
swiftly, and God’s gospel movement will gain even more powerful momentum.
Do we have the love the lost souls? We must
pray for those souls. Do we feel the love of God in pain for the suffering
world? We must pray for the suffering world.
Bob Piers, the founder of World Vision,
used to pray like this: “Oh, Father! What is the pain in your heart today? Let
it also make my heart so painful today!”
In 1723, Robert Miller, a Scottish man of
prayer, appealed for intercessory prayer for the conversion of savages, and in
twenty years he was able to operate more than 200 Prayer Groups for the natives
in British colonies.
A great man of God in North America in
1747, Jonathan Edwards, pleaded for a spiritual revival and urgent prayer for
the expansion of the Heavenly Kingdom, and gave a call to unite the World
Evangelization Urgent Prayer Alliance. As a result, the Great Awakening in New
England and the mission movement to American Indians broke out.
William Carey who began ‘The Unit of
Prayers’ system in England in the 18th century, the Isaac Backus who
sent a ‘Plea for Prayer’ to all the ministers of every denomination in America
in 1794, the James McGready who initiated ‘The Concert of Prayer’ in 1799, and
Jerimiah Lanphier, who organized the prayer movement with 6 people in New York
out of 800,000 population of the city, expanded and ‘The Landslide of Prayer’
phenomenon!
This Landslide of Prayer of New York
ignited D.L. Moody in Chicago, and won more than a million souls every year
when the national population was just 30 million. This movement continued to
spread to England, South India and South Africa.
In 1905, 25% of the students of Yale
University participated in the prayer group, almost the entire population of
Atlantic City (600,000) in New Jersey were saved except 50 people, and in
Portland, Oregon, more than 200 stores were closed between 11 in the morning to
2 in the afternoon to pray.
The battle of prayer of Evan Roberts, a
young man from Wales, spread to Great Britain, Norway, Sweden, Denmark,
Germany, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Africa, Brazil, Mexico and Chile.
What was the main force behind these
movements? Very simple! People prayed and God responded! Prayer movement always
initiates a revival usually ignites a mission movements.
A Prayer movement is always in the
beginning! The battle of prayer guarantees the victory over satan and the
world!
How can we complete world evangelization?
We need to expand the foundation of missions. In other words, it is impossible,
without the full involvement of the laity which consists of 99% of the church,
to complete world missions.
Just as a tree without roots falls down,
movements without roots cannot bear fruits. It is needless to say that
mobilization of the church for missions becomes possible when the mission
movement is connected to the laity.
What then is the best strategy of the
Mission Spirit? I believe it is a prayer mission movement.
KWM’96 is appealing to you, the Korean
churches of the world, “to Plead the Urgent need Prayer and a Spiritual
